Arequipa

Santa Catalina Convent is described as Arequipa´s most remarkable attraction. This Dominican convent was fully restored, and opened to the the public in 1970, after four centuries of seclusion. We took a 120 minute guided tour of its cobbled streets, flower decked cloisters and buttressed houses, which was 90 minutes too long for Warren´s limited attention span.

He hurried us off to see "Juanita", the famous ice mummy of a 12 - 14 year old Inca girl who was sacrificed at the top of a volcano and lay undisturbed under the ice for approximately 500 years until her discovery. To ensure Juanita does not thaw, she´s displayed in a glass cabinet that´s all but frozen at -20 deg celsius and allows only those with vivid imaginations to envisage what she looks like.
